In the series of short-haired cats (same pose with a different geometric backdrop) Denny chose the color black for a stark, bewitching feel. The challenge was to have the central figure stand out on top of the busy background. That was achieved with simplification, contrast, and a fine, white, pinstripe outline. This gave the dark “Familiar” a chance to shine.
