One Day My Friends and Me

Were in the Maple Tree

Working on the Treehouse

Footloose and Fancy Free

I Heard My Sister Calling

For Dinner Would be Soon

I dropped Down from the Tree

Late in the Afternoon

I Ran Down the Grassy Hill

To Fields of Rye and Hay

In Between the Treehouse

And Our Home Not Far Away

Into the Sea of Rye

I Ran to her with Speed

Squid Like Arms Suddenly

Halted My Stampede

She Sounded so far Away

I Thought so, but Alas

That Sneaky Little Magpie

Laid Waiting in the Grass

While Muffling Her Voice

And Shouting to the South

She Sounded Far Away from Me

With Hand Across Her Mouth

I Kicked and Squealed

And Called Her Names

As She Sat there with Pride

Knowing that She Fooled Me Good

And Took Me for a Ride

Her Cry Could Never Fade to Grey

As Every Year Passed By

From Sea to Sea

She’s Known to Me

As the Catcher in the Rye
