 With immigration in the news, I was inspired to create an image that depicted human kindness and decency in its simplest and most primal form. And in painting the Human Condition, Lady Liberty nursing an immigrant child seemed powerful and fitting to me; humanity defining. As the dove, a universal symbol of motherhood and peace watches on, the sign of death and bad luck mocks the longing for freedom. So, our mother calls, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Lady Liberty; Surrogate Mother to the world.
