This is a piece about circles and direction. Wheels within wheels, going round and round, spinning, spinning, spinning, spinning, spinning, moving ever closer to their target. Inspired by the interlocking Olympic rings, I wanted to create a multi-circular piece of epic proportion… or at least one with big circles (and a few small ones). My initial thought was to create a composition around the negative space of these multiple circles… that thought held true throughout the process. Taking two circles of different sizes (or not) butt- fitting them (almost) against one another creating fascinating, secondary shapes in the negative space. The challenge (I thought) was to come up with a color scheme that would highlight the large circles and contrast with the intricate background. The solution came down to crisscrossing, linier patterns in the geometric shapes outside of those large (and small) circles. However, the real challenge came two thirds of the way into the project when it was clear that the stagnant, interlocking rings were lacking motion and were not a strong centerpiece as they sat. After trial and error, and days of pulling my hair out, I came up with the perfect solution; Arrowheads!!
