Although I primarily used a monochromatic palette of Blue + Black and White with multiple spot colors of various hues in this reimagining of Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night,” as I did in the first two, some modifications had to be made. At a smaller size than the first two reinterpretations of Van Gogh’s work, simplifications in details and shapes were necessary at this scale. The most challenging part of the painting process was the rendering of the linework. With acrylic paint pens, straight edges, and round templates, I carefully applied the detail. No matter how careful I was, inconsistent line weight, smudges, and smears occurred. With painstaking control and care, I cleaned up the mishaps with brush and pen, regaining the beauty of a starry night.
